Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1/3 stick Crisco® Baking Sticks Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1/2 cup chopped celery
  • 1/3 cup chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/8 tsp. ground black or white pepper
  • 1 (14 1/2 oz.) can chicken broth
  • 2 cups milk
  • 3 cups shredded Colby or Cheddar cheese
  • 1/8 tsp. liquid smoke
  • Bacon bits

Directions

  • Step 1

    MELT shortening in 3-quart saucepan. Add celery and onion. Cook and stir over medium heat 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Stir in flour, salt and pepper. Cook and stir until bubbly.

  • Step 2

    BLEND in chicken broth and milk. Cook and stir 10 to 12 minutes or until mixture comes to boil and thickens. Remove from heat.

  • Step 3

    ADD cheese, 1 cup at a time, stirring to melt after each addition. Stir in liquid smoke. Garnish each serving with bacon bits, if desired.
