Sausage and Green Chile Strata

This is an easy make-ahead option for a delicious brunch! It really is best when assembled at least a day ahead, making it an easy last minute dish to pop in the oven. Choose spicy breakfast sausage if you like an extra kick. The wonderful aroma while it's baking will make your guests feel welcome—and hungry!

Ingredients

  • Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
  • 8 soft white bread slices
  • 1/4 cup Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1/2 lb. bulk pork sausage
  • 1 (4 oz.) can green chiles
  • 1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp. mustard
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper

Directions

  • Step 1

    SPRAY an 8 x 8-inch glass baking dish with no-stick cooking spray.

  • Step 2

    BRUSH bread slices with melted shortening. Place 4 slices in prepared dish. Top with half the sausage, chiles and cheese. Top with 4 more slices of bread, then remaining sausage and chiles.

  • Step 3

    BEAT together eggs, milk, mustard, salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture over the layers; sprinkle with remaining cheese.*

  • Step 4

    HEAT oven to 350ºF. Bake about 40 minutes or until puffed and center is set. Let stand 5 to 10 minutes before cutting into squares.

  • Step 5

    * Can be prepared a day ahead to this point. Cover and refrigerate until ready to bake.
