Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsps. sugar
  • 1 1/4 tsps. ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup plus 2 Tbsps. buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsps. Crisco® Baking Sticks Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray
  • Fresh fruit, such as sliced strawberries or sliced banana
  • 1 (14 oz.) can Eagle Brand® Sweetened Condensed Milk

Directions

  • Step 1

    COMBINE flour, cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, cayenne pepper and salt in medium bowl, stirring until well blended.

  • Step 2

    BEAT egg white in medium bowl with electric mixer on high speed until stiff. Whisk buttermilk and egg yolk in a separate bowl until blended.

  • Step 3

    MAKE a well in center of flour mixture. Add shortening and buttermilk mixture, stirring until thoroughly moistened. Stir in chocolate chips. Fold in beaten egg white.

  • Step 4

    COAT waffle iron with no-stick cooking spray and heat to medium temperature. Spoon or ladle batter onto waffle iron. Cook 3 to 4 minutes according to manufacturer's directions, or until golden brown. Remove from waffle iron. Repeat to cook remaining waffles. Serve topped with fresh fruit, if desired. Drizzle with sweetened condensed milk.
