Crisco® Pie Hotline (1-877-FOR PIE TIPS) is Helping Consumers Make Perfect Pies

Orrville, OH (November 1, 2006) — As the holidays approach, menus will be filled with one of Americans favorite holiday desserts — pie! From the favorite apple pie to traditional Thanksgiving pumpkin pie to savory pies, creating the perfect homemade pie may leave any chef intimidated. To help ease the stress this busy holiday baking season, Crisco®, the most trusted brand for shortening, sprays and oils, has announced a new pie hotline — 1-877-FOR PIE TIPS (1-877-367-7438) — which offers consumers advice to help make their best pies ever.

The Crisco Pie Hotline answers the most common questions about baking pies for novice bakers as well as offering tips that will benefit the most seasoned baker. In fact, nearly half (48%) of all U.S. women agree that an easy resource for pie baking information would be a big help according to a recent survey* conducted by Kelton Research. More good news is that the hotline also offers the option for callers to connect to a live pie expert for pie baking guidance.

In addition to Crisco Pie Experts, the hotline features Country Music Artist Jamie O' Neal and 2006 National Pie Championship Winner Valarie Enters, revealing their pie making tips and suggestions to help make that perfect pie time after time.

"A pie hotline over the holidays is such a great idea," said Valarie Enters, 2006 National Pie Championship Winner. "There's always at least one point in the pie-making process when we need help — or run into some question a cookbook just can't answer."

The Crisco Pie Hotline offers tips including:

  • How to achieve a tender, flaky crust time after time
  • Solutions to common pie crust problems, such as preventing dough from becoming too crumbly, thick or soggy
  • Pie baking tips that will save time in the kitchen and help your pies come out looking and tasting great
  • How to choose and prepare pie fillings, both savory and sweet
  • Information on decorating pies with just a few special touches that will wow guests and keep them coming back for more
  • Answers to frequently asked questions about Crisco shortenings and sprays

"Crisco has been a staple for generations when it comes to baking, and now our pie hotline is another tool to help bakers put their best pie forward," said Maribeth Badertscher, Director, Corporate Communications, The J.M. Smucker Company. "We're very excited to offer the service to holiday pie bakers this year."

Pie lovers can listen to the pie hotline by calling 1-877-FOR PIE TIPS November 1 through December 31. A live pie expert can be reached Monday through Friday from 9am to 7pm EST, with extended hours from 8am — 8pm EST November 13 through 22 and December 18 through 22. Consumers can also visit to find useful charts, tips and simple recipes to help create that perfect pie this holiday season.

*The survey of 500 American women aged 18 and older was conducted by Kelton Research on behalf of The J.M. Smucker Company in April 2006.
