White Sauce
INGREDIENTS:
- THIN
- 1 tablespoon Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- OR 1 tablespoon Crisco® Baking Sticks Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- 1 tablespoon Pillsbury BEST® All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon white or black pepper
- 1 cup milk
- MEDIUM
- 2 tablespoons Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- OR 2 tablespoons Crisco® Baking Sticks Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- 2 tablespoons Pillsbury BEST® All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon white or black pepper
- 1 cup milk
- THICK
- 3 tablespoons Crisco® Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- OR 3 tablespoons Crisco® Baking Sticks Butter Flavor All-Vegetable Shortening
- 3 tablespoons Pillsbury BEST® All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon white or black pepper
- 1 cup milk
PREPARATION DIRECTIONS:

MELT shortening in 1-quart saucepan. Remove from heat. Whisk in flour, salt and pepper. Slowly blend in milk.

COOK over medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture thickens and bubbles.

VARIATIONS

HERB SAUCE: Follow the recipe above, adding 1/4 teaspoon dried herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, dill, summer savory, etc.) with flour, salt and pepper.

CHEESE SAUCE: Follow the recipe above, adding 1/2 cup shredded cheese after mixture thickens. Stir until cheese melts.
